19 vaccines.
During her nearly five years at Moderna, Melanie scaled the development organization from 30
to more than 1,000 colleagues, established an operating model that delivered over 40

Harwell, UK, while expanding the company’s global R&D footprint.
Earlier in her career, Melanie held senior leadership roles at Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Shire, and Takeda,

Country Medical Director at Moderna UK, Dr Philip Cruz, has over 15 years of experience in medical affairs in the field of vaccines and paediatrics within the pharmaceutical industry. At Moderna in the UK, Dr Cruz is responsible for the development and execution of the medical affairs strategy for Moderna’s infectious disease franchise and drives scientific leadership for the vaccine portfolio, while ensuring compliance with applicable policies and procedures. From 2018, he held the position of Chief Manufacturing Officer, leading the strategic manufacturing, supply chain, skills and industrial growth programmes. In this role, he led the design, build and GMP licensing of the innovative £75m CGT Catapult facility in Stevenage, establishing a unique operating model and making the facility central to the development of the Stevenage cell and gene therapy cluster. He also led on the set-up and GMP licensing of the CGT Catapult site in Braintree, which is equipped to accelerate the development of GMP manufacturing operations for advanced therapies at a clinical and commercial scale.
In 2024, he moved to the role of Chief Technology Officer where he focuses on the organisation’s technology development strategy.
He brings to the organisation over two decades of specialised cell and gene therapy expertise from his career in biological medicine research, development and manufacturing. Dr Sheuli Porkess is an experienced pharmaceutical physician, specialising in medical affairs, digital health & AI and life sciences policy and within the UK and internationally. Sheuli is the President of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine, CMO and Reinventing Health and Director of Actaros Consultancy and holds a number of other advisory roles.
Prior to this Sheuli has held medical leadership roles in companies nationally, regionally and globally. Sheuli is also the former Director of Research, Medical and Innovation at the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry.
Sheuli is a Fellow of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine, a Global Fellow in Medicine Development with IFAPP and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London.
