Global Technical lead, Precision Diagnostics
I have worked for QIAGEN for 9 years and am based in our Manchester site which is our global centre of excellence for molecular diagnostic development. QIAGEN partner with many drug companies to develop companion diagnostic (CDx) tests that enable clinical trials and subsequently launches of novel precision medicines. In recent years we have seen a real move beyond oncology into other disease areas such as immune, neurological and metabolic disorders. My role as global technical lead allows me to leverage my oncology precision medicine experience across our portfolio to bring precision diagnostic products to more patients. I have built my experience in precision medicine/oncology through not only my QIAGEN role but also through seven years working in precision medicine in AstraZeneca and prior to that working as part of the cancer genome project at the Sanger institute.
I am also an honorary senior lecturer at University of Manchester where I coordinate and deliver lectures for a QIAGEN sponsored BSc final year elective module ‘The Role of Diagnostics in Medicine’. This is part of a wider outreach role with the University and our NHS hospital where we are co-located. Through these roles I am keen to impact the local, UK science community.

Lucid is accredited to ISO 13485 for medical device design and manufacturing. Most of our work involves wireless comms, intuitive digital user interfaces, electronics and mechanical development. Outside of healthcare we apply the same skills to other compliance constrained fields such as ATEX/ICEX devices, security systems, to cosmetic rejuvenation products, toys and games.
Lucid’s team can help clients to source production, manage statutory test and product delivery. Much of our work is spotting and planning the development of early stage opportunities, particularly for VCs and Universities. This includes setting up and leading the North West of England’s Health and Life sciences Cluster (HealthTech) and establishing other clusters in sectors such as Space.
The clusters exist to connect key capabilities between stakeholders, national science facilities and innovators in the wider ecosystem to support collaboration, cross-sector innovation and community building.
A scientist by background, he undertook a PhD for the European Space Agency at King’s College London, conducting numerous studies on a SkinSuit which was designed to support astronauts in space and reduce the risk of spinal issues post flight. This has subsequently been used on several astronaut missions.
Passionate about cross sector opportunities, including Health & Space, for 5 years he coordinated the UK’s Space Life and Biomedical Science Association, which among other core activities he led the development of the UK Position Paper ‘Why Space?
