Prior to joining CPI Dave worked for GSK. He joined the company in 1992 as a PhD Chemist from Glasgow University. He has over 20 years’ experience at GSK carrying out a number of Technical, Compliance and Manufacturing leadership roles. In 1997 he moved to Irvine to take up a lead chemist role before coming Quality Control Manager in 1998. He joined the site leadership team in 2001 to run Technical Development before moving to manufacturing as Actives Production Director in 2005.
During this time he completed a Masters degree in Manufacturing Leadership at Cambridge University. In 2007 he moved to GSK House to work on a central network re-structuring project before becoming Site Director at Montrose in October 2008. At Montrose, he led the transformation of the site to manufacture over 12 products for GSK including a major investment programme. In 2011 he was appointed VP Primary Supply Chain with responsibility for global Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) manufacture and supply, a network of GMS sites across the world including facilities in Asia and Europe. In 2017 he was appointed VP Head of GMS Strategy with responsibility for manufacturing strategy, deployment of strategic programmes, performance management and advocacy.
He plays an active role with a number of Governments and is currently co-chair of the Life Sciences Scotland Industry Leadership Group.

Elaine is a Grand Challenge Leader supporting Biologics and based at Director of the Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre, Glasgow.
Elaine is leading the launch of a grand challenge within Biologics, with the aim of accelerating and optimizing the development processes for biologic medicines.
Prior to joining CPI in February 2022 Elaine worked for 5 years with BioPhorum facilitating collaboration on global improvement projects within the biopharmaceutical industry. These projects involved 25 biopharmaceutical companies working together to solve challenges in Microbial Control, Human Performance, Change Management, Deviation Management and Multi-product Facility cleaning, validation, and operation.
Before joining BioPhorum, Elaine worked as a Continuous Improvement Manager with companies in biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing, medical device development and manufacture, automotive manufacturing and energy retail. Elaine was also a technical expert in fermentation, an Operational excellence expert and a Knowledge Manager during her 15 years with GlaxoSmithKline at their Irvine antibiotic facility.
Elaine has a BSc (Hons) and Ph.D in Applied Microbiology, from Strathclyde University, and was a post-doctoral research associate at Heriot Watt University in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Professor Alastair Florence is Distinguished professor in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Strathclyde and Director of CMAC leading a portfolio of collaborative research, training and translational programmes aimed at transforming the way medicines are developed and manufactured. Manufacturing research is targeted in enabling greater use of digital and advanced processing technologies. He leads several flagship projects including the EPSRC Future CMAC Research Hub and recently announced Made Smarter Innovation Digital Medicines Manufacturing Research Centre. The portfolio is being delivered in close partnership with leading industrial partners from across pharmaceutical manufacturing sector and academic collaborators.
His research expertise is in crystallisation and physical form control and characterisation of pharmaceuticals. Extensive experience in the formation of pharmaceutical particles in continuous processes using a range of technologies and in the development and application of digital tools and predictive methods to control and monitor crystallisation and pharmaceutical solids. Approaches for the characterisation of particles are also widely used and physical analysis of crystalline pharmaceuticals with a focus on the influence of crystallisation processes on structure and critical pharmaceutically relevant attributes that dictates product performance. Sophie is the R&D IT Business Partner to the Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biologics Pharmaceutical Development spanning AstraZeneca’s Global CMC network in R&D. She is a member of the Early Science IT Leadership Team and co-chair of AZ Pride Ireland and UK.
Sophie joined AstraZeneca in 2005 and has held a number of leading roles across chemical development and product development, delivering drug projects from Phase 1 to commercial submission. In 2019 Sophie led a global digital transformation program, delivering a new digital backbone for data capture, use, and reuse for 1250 scientists across 9 development sites.
Her cross disciplinary team has deployed a number of digital solutions, integrating key software and equipment to deliver a seamless data transfer, increasing data quality, and reducing time required for data handling. Sophie has successfully developed business cases to identify critical software and capability build required to increase predictions, advanced modelling, and data science capabilities, allowing scientists to innovate in a simulated environment thereby targeting physical experiments and reducing laboratory waste.
Sophie has a PhD in Separation Science with research focused on modelling separation mechanisms of complex polar molecules, she is a Chartered Chemist with Royal Society of Chemistry. Sophie has a diploma in Business Management and is a Chartered Manager with CMI.

John is the Director of the Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre, Glasgow, a collaboration between CPI, University of Strathclyde, UK Research & Industry, Scottish Enterprise and founding industry partners, AstraZeneca and GSK.
The centre will ensure the UK is a technology and innovation leader in pharmaceutical manufacturing, thereby boosting the competitiveness of both sectors. The initial focus will be on technology translation for small molecule drug manufacture.
Prior to joining CPI in October 2019 John worked for GSK, joining the company in 1986 as a Process Chemist at the Worthing Site. During his time on Site he held roles covering all aspects of the manufacturing supply chain from large scale fermentation, fine chemicals (both chemical and enzymatic conversions), Chemical Development and Secondary Sterile Operations.
After 10 years of site base roles he was seconded to Head office to lead a workstream of a global supply restructuring programme. In 2000 he moved to the Irvine plant to lead the Development team and take change of the construction a new 300te nanomilling and spray drying plant. This period was followed with a number of roles working out of GSK House in strategic program leadership including Head of the Global Manufacturing & Supply Programme Management Office, 5 years in the Core Business Services Function (IT, Procurement and Real estate) as Head of PMO and finally back to manufacturing to Leader a Global manufacturing restructuring programme.
John has a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, an MBA from Strathclyde University Business School, a Private Pilot’s license and double decker bus license.

Director of New Modalities
Nigel completed his first degree in Chemistry and subsequent PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry at Exeter University, UK. Interested by the analytical chemistry challenges within his research at Exeter, his first industrial appointment was with Dow AgroSciences as an Analytical Chemist. After nine years with Dow, he moved to GSK as an Analytical Team Leader within the Chemical Development Division based in Stevenage, UK. Whilst at GSK, Nigel led the analytical activities to commercialisation for Tykerb (breast cancer medicine) and led GSK’s oligonucleotide therapy for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy into the final stages of development and regulatory submission. He has also worked as Chemistry Lead in a team focused on novel platforms for oligonucleotide delivery. More recently, he held the position of Senior Director within the CMC Analytical Division, leading a department of 55 scientists who focused on analytical modernization and new technology introduction. In 2019, Nigel established McLean Pharma Consultancy Ltd, which focuses on CMC, analytical and oligonucleotide consultancy.
As CatSci’s Director of New Modalities, Nigel supports Argonaute RNA as Head of Regulatory Affairs and was the Principle Investigator for the OligoFLAME consortium grant proposal for the Nucleic Acid Therapeutic Accelerator (NATA) Grand Challenge to develop an alternative manufacturing platform to conventional solid phase synthesis.

Dr. Jill Caswell is the Biology Technical Leader within Almac’s Biocatalysis group. After obtaining a degree in Biochemistry Jill worked in the industry producing recombinant proteins in a variety of host organisms before obtaining a PhD in 2011 through an industrial collaboration with Queen’s Univerity Belfast.
Jill’s career has focussed on recombinant enzyme expression as well as molecular biology techniques that enable enzyme engineering. She joined Almac’s Biocatalysis group in 2012 with 10 years of industry-relevant experience to bring to the biology team, helping to grow the enzyme engineering capabilities.

John is the Director of the Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre, Glasgow, a collaboration between CPI, University of Strathclyde, UK Research & Industry, Scottish Enterprise and founding industry partners, AstraZeneca and GSK.
The centre will ensure the UK is a technology and innovation leader in pharmaceutical manufacturing, thereby boosting the competitiveness of both sectors. The initial focus will be on technology translation for small molecule drug manufacture.
Prior to joining CPI in October 2019 John worked for GSK, joining the company in 1986 as a Process Chemist at the Worthing Site. During his time on Site he held roles covering all aspects of the manufacturing supply chain from large scale fermentation, fine chemicals (both chemical and enzymatic conversions), Chemical Development and Secondary Sterile Operations.
After 10 years of site base roles he was seconded to Head office to lead a workstream of a global supply restructuring programme. In 2000 he moved to the Irvine plant to lead the Development team and take change of the construction a new 300te nanomilling and spray drying plant. This period was followed with a number of roles working out of GSK House in strategic program leadership including Head of the Global Manufacturing & Supply Programme Management Office, 5 years in the Core Business Services Function (IT, Procurement and Real estate) as Head of PMO and finally back to manufacturing to Leader a Global manufacturing restructuring programme.
John has a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, an MBA from Strathclyde University Business School, a Private Pilot’s license and double decker bus license.

Director, Continuous Manufacturing and Advanced Crystallisation (CMAC) Research Hub
Professor Alastair Florence is Distinguished professor in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Strathclyde and Director of CMAC leading a portfolio of collaborative research, training and translational programmes aimed at transforming the way medicines are developed and manufactured. Manufacturing research is targeted in enabling greater use of digital and advanced processing technologies. He leads several flagship projects including the EPSRC Future CMAC Research Hub and recently announced Made Smarter Innovation Digital Medicines Manufacturing Research Centre. The portfolio is being delivered in close partnership with leading industrial partners from across pharmaceutical manufacturing sector and academic collaborators.
His research expertise is in crystallisation and physical form control and characterisation of pharmaceuticals. Extensive experience in the formation of pharmaceutical particles in continuous processes using a range of technologies and in the development and application of digital tools and predictive methods to control and monitor crystallisation and pharmaceutical solids. Approaches for the characterisation of particles are also widely used and physical analysis of crystalline pharmaceuticals with a focus on the influence of crystallisation processes on structure and critical pharmaceutically relevant attributes that dictates product performance. Has published over 120 peer reviewed research papers in these areas and currently supervises a large multidisciplinary research group.

Head of Intracellular Drug Delivery Centre
Juliana (Jules) Haggerty is Head of Centre of Excellence in Lipid Nanoparticles at CPI where she is responsible for anchoring and advancing UK capability and building collaborative Grand Challenge programmes in this exciting technology area, essential for the delivery of RNA vaccines and therapeutics. She supported CPI’s programmes in RNA vaccines for the UK Vaccine Taskforce in 2020 and provided expert advice and due diligence on legacy activities and onshoring throughout 2021.
Jules sits on the Technology and Innovation committee of the Medicines Manufacturing Industry Partnership and on the Technology Roadmapping and Digital Technology Roadmapping groups within BioPhorum. She has significant expertise in the use of public/ private funding and collaborative R&D models to advance technology and innovation and led this activity within CPI for 5 years.
Jules has a BSc (Hons) degree in Physiological Sciences and an Engineering Doctorate in Biopharmaceutical Process Development from Newcastle University. In her early career, she spent 8 years at global Life Sciences company, Millipore, working on advanced and novel technology development and developing downstream processing best practice for biopharmaceutical manufacture.

Piers, a PhD holder from Kings College London, specializes in oligonucleotide and phospholipid synthesis, with a PostDoc from UCL. With expertise in phosphorylated metabolites, he led chemistry in the Livingston Group from 2012 to 2019, focusing on innovative research. Named on 6 patents in Nanostar Sieving, he currently heads the Chemistry team at Exactmer, spearheading groundbreaking research and development efforts.

Daniel Markl is a Professor in Pharmaceutical Product Engineering at the University of Strathclyde and Associate Director at the CMAC Future Manufacturing Research Centre. After 17 years in agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals process development, scale-up and manufacturing at an SME, a CDMO and large pharma in technical, managerial and consultancy positions, Ian moved to his current role focusing on maximising benefit and impact of the industry-academia interactions. This involves facilitating knowledge and technology transfer as well as running a range of pre-competitive and confidential projects at the interface of drug substance and drug product. More recently this work has involved technical leadership in the development and practical implementation of digital process design and digital-twins for crystallisation and isolation processes.

Hannah is a chartered chemical engineer with 18 years experience in the Pharma industry, spanning manufacturing and development; innovator and CDMO; across both batch and continuous processing.
Whilst previously working at GSK, Hannah spent 10 years in the field of continuous processing, including development, industrialisation and successful registration of GSK’s first continuous API process. This involved engagement with regulatory agencies and working closely with manufacturing and quality organisations to define and implement new procedures to make commercial, GMP, continuous processing a reality. Subsequently she led the technical development of new continuous platform technologies to expand capability for project delivery.
Her current role within Chemical Development at AstraZeneca encompasses the integration of new technologies and approaches within the core business processes, to ensure the benefits can be realised and built upon to meet the ever changing challenges to the small molecule supply chain.

Deputy Challenge Director – Medicines Manufacturing Challenge
Mark Talford has over 20 years of experience in research and innovation posts in industry and academia. Beginning his career as a lecturer in Chemical Engineering at the University of Bradford, Mark joined BNFL, and later British Nuclear Group, Sellafield following the closure of Bradford’s original course. As a Senior Technical Advisor to the Waste Vitrification Plants Mark was responsible for the delivery of a multi-million-pound annual programme of process improvement research from both UK and overseas contractors.
In 2006 Mark joined Britest Ltd, becoming Technical Director in 2012 and CEO in 2018. At Britest Mark was involved in the scoping and delivery of several pharma, speciality and fine chemicals collaborative innovation projects including the EU F3 Factory and SYNFLOW programmes and the UK AMSCI ReMediES and ADDoPT projects, as well as supporting a variety of pharma and non-pharma MNC’s and CDMOs develop and implement novel primary and secondary manufacturing processes using the Britest process understanding toolkit. He joined the UKRI Medicines Manufacturing Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund Team as Deputy Challenge Director in February 2021.

John is the head of the Perceptive APC product unit within Applied Materials’ APG Pharma group. His role is to lead the team that delivers software and solutions for Advanced Process Control, process monitoring and optimisation in the process industries. He is particularly interested in developing robust model-based systems to reduce process development costs and to optimise routine manufacturing. His experience includes developing solutions for many processes including: an entire paper mill, industrial boilers, and continuous pharmaceutical processes through to lab-scale crystallisers and micro-fluidic systems.

Prior to joining CPI Dave worked for GSK. He joined the company in 1992 as a PhD Chemist from Glasgow University. He has over 20 years’ experience at GSK carrying out a number of Technical, Compliance and Manufacturing leadership roles. In 1997 he moved to Irvine to take up a lead chemist role before coming Quality Control Manager in 1998. He joined the site leadership team in 2001 to run Technical Development before moving to manufacturing as Actives Production Director in 2005.
During this time he completed a Masters degree in Manufacturing Leadership at Cambridge University. In 2007 he moved to GSK House to work on a central network re-structuring project before becoming Site Director at Montrose in October 2008. At Montrose, he led the transformation of the site to manufacture over 12 products for GSK including a major investment programme. In 2011 he was appointed VP Primary Supply Chain with responsibility for global Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) manufacture and supply, a network of GMS sites across the world including facilities in Asia and Europe. In 2017 he was appointed VP Head of GMS Strategy with responsibility for manufacturing strategy, deployment of strategic programmes, performance management and advocacy.
He plays an active role with a number of Governments and is currently co-chair of the Life Sciences Scotland Industry Leadership Group.
