Pharma has spent the last decade building evidence for sustainability. The harder question now is what to do with it. As energy costs, climate risk and regulation reshape the industry, sustainability has become a test of whether a business, supply chain or health system is built to last.
Pharma Sustainability Integrates returns for its fifth year to put the key questions to the people best placed answer them. Leaders from industry, healthcare, policy, and technology will examine how sustainability creates value, strengthens resilience, and drives action across the healthcare ecosystem.
This year we will discuss:
Building sustainability into the resilience journey, so planning for energy, water and supply shocks also prepares health systems for a changing climate.
Turning sustainability data into value creation, from impact frameworks that convince a CFO to AI that crunches carbon metrics and whether it earns its footprint.
Delivering greener products and supply chains: circularity and ecodesign across the value chain, and supplier engagement that drives real emissions reductions.

With pricing pressure, geopolitical uncertainty and reporting fatigue all biting at once, is pharma's sustainability commitment holding, or quietly slipping down the agenda? This conversation brings together senior voices from industry and healthcare to ask whether sustainability is still treated as a driver of long-term value, and what it will take to keep it there.

The shift to more sustainable medicines manufacturing isn't starting from one place. Innovators, manufacturers, regulators, investors and health systems each face different pressures and measures of success. How can the sector build a shared understanding of value, make the case for change before complete datasets exist, and find the evidence that resonates with decision-makers across the system

PwC
Managing Director, Strategy& - Energy Value Optimsation
Will is a Managing Director and leads the Energy Value Optimisation (EVO) proposition for PwC UK. EVO is how we help energy consuming businesses to save money and create value by changing the way they use, buy, produce and trade energy.
We help businesses to develop integrated energy strategies that build from their existing progress – combining and optimising energy efficiency & time of use, electrification, generation & storage, energy tariffs and market mechanisms – to deliver cost savings, new revenues, improved energy resilience and decarbonisation.
We support our clients through business case approval, we help them to secure finance to fund energy investments, we provide the negotiation support and legal services to structure the necessary performance contracts, we advise on relevant taxes and incentives. Crucially, we work side-by-side with our clients to help them implement their energy transformation programmes, ensuring that results are delivered and sustained.
Will has supported a wide range of businesses and investors on energy and sustainability strategy for more than 20 years. Previously he chaired the “Planet” work-stream of the landmark World Economic Forum project “Measuring Stakeholder Capitalism”. He is a member of the advisory group for The Capitals Coalition and was one of the lead authors of the Natural Capital Protocol (2016). He was an author and editor for The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) (2010), and a co-author of the UK government’s framework for Corporate Natural Capital Accounting (2015). He also authored and edited the economics and business chapters of a university textbook on Planetary Health (Island Press, 2020).
He has served on steering committees for the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the UK Natural Capital Initiative (NCI), and has led multiple collaborative projects for the WBCSD and the World Economic Forum (WEF).
Circularity is not only about end-of-life; some of the biggest gains can stem from using fewer resources in the first place. From process intensification and continuous manufacturing to facility design and material choices, how can pharma cut resource consumption, energy and physical footprint while maintaining or increasing output, and close the loop on what remains?
Resilience and sustainability often run as separate programmes, yet the same shocks threaten both: energy price spikes, water scarcity, extreme weather and supplier failure. With heat-stressed hospitals and disrupted cold chains making adaptation as urgent as mitigation, this session explores how organisations fold sustainability into resilience planning, and where the two agendas reinforce each other.

Most of pharma's footprint sits with suppliers, who are hearing the same requests from every customer. With the NHS Supplier Roadmap and pharma procurement policies setting hard expectations, how do you manage suppliers to drive action rather than data collection? This panel explores incentives, shared standards, consortium approaches and what moves the needle for smaller suppliers.
Pharma has more sustainability data than it can use, and AI promises to crunch it, turning product carbon metrics into real-time decisions. But the technology behind that promise has its own energy and water footprint. Can pharma deploy AI and automation for genuine net environmental benefit, rather than shifting impact from lab to data centre?
